1865-1895- States require students ages 8 to 14 to go to school for 12 to 16 weeks per year.
1865-1877- African Americans protest for southern public education and are given the right to public education with some limitations.
1867- Department of Education is created. Howard University is started as education for African Americans in the sciences and liberal arts.
1874- Michigan court allows a city to levy takes for public schools.
1874- The first United States tennis match is held.
1875- The Civil Rights Act is passed, but it would be ruled unconstitutional in 1883.
1875- Mark Twain publishes The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
1876- Meharry Medical College in Nashville is founded. It was the first medical school for African Americans
